Quantum Random Number Generation (QRNG) Initiative

The high-entropy quantum photon-based RNG programme focuses on generating truly unpredictable random numbers by leveraging the inherent randomness of quantum photonic processes such as photon arrival time, phase noise, or vacuum fluctuations. This initiative develops compact, high-rate QRNG modules capable of delivering entropy sources with provable quantum origin, supported by real-time entropy extraction and health-monitoring algorithms. The objective is to establish secure, scalable, and high-throughput QRNG technology suitable for national cybersecurity, financial systems, and advanced computing environments.

This component ensures that QRNG systems meet stringent international cryptographic standards such as NIST SP 800-90, ISO/IEC 18031, and ETSI quantum-security guidelines. It includes developing compliance frameworks, statistical validation pipelines, and long-term entropy assessments to guarantee the suitability of QRNG outputs for mission-critical cryptographic applications. By adhering to recognised global standards, the initiative positions Malaysia’s QRNG solutions for secure deployment across government, defence, finance, and commercial sectors, while enabling future certification for global markets.

Hardware integration efforts focus on embedding QRNG modules into cloud infrastructures, secure network appliances, edge devices, and national data-centre environments to ensure universal access to high-quality quantum entropy. This involves designing secure APIs, firmware interfaces, and scalable entropy distribution services that supply quantum randomness to cryptographic engines, key-management systems, and AI frameworks. The initiative aims to build a robust national entropy infrastructure that strengthens digital trust and enhances resilience across telecommunications, IoT, and cloud-native ecosystems.

Certification and security testing activities ensure that QRNG devices undergo rigorous evaluation to validate their quantum origin, resilience against tampering, and robustness under real-world operating conditions. This includes performing physical security assessments, side-channel analyses, entropy stress testing, and compliance audits by accredited laboratories. The goal is to establish trusted, certifiable QRNG hardware that meets national and international cybersecurity requirements, enabling secure adoption across critical infrastructure and high-assurance digital systems.
